  • Isolation and Structure Determination of Marine Bioactive Natural Products

Marine habitats represent a valuable resource for novel bioactive secondary metabolites. Many studies and research are directed towards isolation and structure elucidation of biologically active natural products and an increasingly large number of these compounds including antimicrobial, antifugal and antitumor metabolites with a wide variety of chemical classes were isolated.

Medically and pharmaceutically, there is an increasing interest in discovering cures for several diseases from natural origin, and the need for new agents effective against many diseases in humans is assuming a growing priority.

Our project is to investigate marine sponges and algae from the Red Sea of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and is dedicated to the discovery, isolation, and structure determination of novel biologically active natural product.

The process of isolation and purification is carried out by employing a variety of chromatographic techniques, including HPLC.  Structure determination of the compounds of interest, chemically and biologically, is accomplished by mass spectrometry, high-field 1D and 2D-NMR spectrometry.
